About Kirk Turner

W. Kirk Turner is a shareholder in the Tulsa, Oklahoma law firm of Newton, O’Connor, Turner & Ketchum, P.C., and the director of the firm’s labor and employment law group and employee training, counsel and litigation services for local, regional and national companies and institutions. Kirk concentrates his practice in the representation of management in all areas of labor and employment law, including employment discrimination actions and charges, wage and hour matters, labor grievances and arbitrations, wrongful discharge and civil rights litigation before federal and state courts, state and federal fair employment practice agencies as well as federal and state appellate courts. Kirk also has extensive experience in representing municipalities in labor and civil rights matters, and routinely represents management in proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board and the Department of Labor.
Kirk also spends a great deal of his time counseling employers on employment related issues, including legal compliance, management training, union avoidance and managing in a union environment, preventative labor and employment law audits, internal investigations, policy development and employment contracts. In addition, Kirk represents management in union labor matters, including elections, grievance resolution and arbitrations, collective bargaining agreement negotiations, strikes and lock-outs, and has experience in alternate dispute resolution including representing clients in mediations, conciliations, interest and grievance arbitrations, and federal and state court settlement conferences.
Kirk was recently named winner of the 2007 Oklahoma Excellence in Human Resources Award. The announcement was made at the 2007 Oklahoma Human Resource State Conference and Expo, held April 29-May 1, 2007, in Oklahoma City.
Kirk is a frequent lecturer on employment law topics for employers, professional human resource associations, universities and law schools and National, State and local bar associations, including serving as a panelist for a national labor and employment law seminar, co-sponsored by the Labor and Employment Law Section of the American Bar Association. Kirk has been a featured speaker at Southern Methodist University’s Annual Multi-State Labor and Employment Law Seminar and at several state human resource conferences.
Kirk is a graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Law. He is a member of the American, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Tulsa County (labor and employment law sections) Bar Associations and is a past Chairman of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the Oklahoma Bar Association. Kirk has been admitted to practice in Arkansas and Oklahoma, the United States District Courts for the Northern, Eastern and Western Districts of Oklahoma, the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Arkansas, the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, the United States Supreme Court, as well as the United States Tax Court.
Kirk has served on the Board of Directors for the Tulsa Area Human Resources Association ("TAHRA") for the past ten years. He is a past President of TAHRA (2002-2003) and currently serves as Vice President, Legislative Affairs and General Counsel. Kirk was selected for inclusion in the 2007 edition of The Best Lawyers of America, is the recipient of the Oklahoma State Council for Human Resources Management’s 2007 Excellence Award, the 2001 TAHRA President’s Award and the 2003 TAHRA Excellence Award. Kirk served five terms as the Vice President-Legislative Affairs and General Counsel for the Oklahoma State Council for Human Resource Management, an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management, and is a past board member of the Tulsa Equal Employment Opportunity Coordinators’ Association. Kirk has been a member of the National Employee and Labor Relations Committee for the Society for Human Resource Management, is a member of the Oklahoma State Chamber of Commerce Human Resources Committee and Legislative Affairs Committee, and serves as General Counsel for WorkForce Tulsa and the Tulsa Better Business Bureau.
